I am pleased to announce publication of my new book on rewilding science co-authored with Cain Blythe

It is the first multi-disciplinary account of the science the underpins rewilding as a conservation agenda and practice.

My journey in rewilding science started back in 2005 when I took a group of students to visit rewilding areas in the Netherlands and meet with the radical ecologists involved. It opened my eyes to news ways of thinking and new possibilities in conservation. Several colleagues joined me over the years and the new approaches being pioneered influenced their research in areas such as long-term ecology, ecosystem science and human-nature relations.  It has been a privilege to witness and be part of the emergence of an international scientific community developing new understandings and directions in ecology and conservation science.

I am not sure I have done full justice to all what is out there but I hope this book will provide and accessible introduction to the science that is inspiring the rewilding movement.   It has quite a strong focus on the co-evolution of herbivores and vegetation. This is partly a reflection of our interests, but is also intended to help extend public rewilding discourse beyond predators. We have also attempted to give a sense of the of the ethics, politics and policy challenges associated with rewilding and finish with ten predictions for rewilding to prompt some discussion.

It is available on Kindle now and the print version from 22nd July 2020
